4月29日 Some Quick Items1) This week was Mid-Terms. I now have "pi-les" of papers, tests and projects to grade. Oi vay!
2) On the societal front, it's May Holiday next week. I will be having a "communicative silence" as I will be traveling by train and bus to Dalian. It's a coastal city of about 6 Million and it's about 7 hours from Siping. I'll return on Thursday with pics and tales of adventures.
3) Spring is also in the air. Trees are starting to bud and shorts have made their way out of the closet. It's good to know that slightly warmer weather has arrived.
4) Forty-nine days left until I will be home!
5) I had a couple of Chinese shirts made by a local tailor. They're so finely tailored! If you want something from China, then send me an email and I'll try to hook you up - style, fabric & all!
Until next Thursday...

It's called Kāi Xīn Lì (开心莉) and it's the best. Now here's the story... About four weeks ago, Robb met a Chinese man who said he has a restaurant. The man had actually lived in Canada for a few years (Robb's home country) and invited Robb to try the food. He went there and was impressed with the hamburger and the chicken strips. Eventually, we went there as a team and tried it out on Easter Weekend. It was really good! So I eat there about once a week now.
About two weeks ago, Robb and I went there to eat. I brought a piece of cheese from home and explained to the owner that I want the cheese on the burger while it is cooking. We explained how Westerners love cheese - especially cheeseburgers. So then we go there last week, and, lo and behold, he has cheese for our burgers. Amazing! Now, mind you, these are no Big Macs or Whoppers, but, for little ol' Siping, they are amazing! I've added it to my "Frequent Places" list.
The final funny is that the restaurant is green: green door, napkins, tables, chairs, wall hangings, toothpick holders, waiter aprons, cashier counter, faux bamboo, plastic trees, menus, picture frames, wall borders, bowls, plates, EVERYTHING. I affectionately named it "The Green Canadian".
Number of views as of this blog entry: 2150. 4月24日 On Sonny, God & JiaoziLast week, I had my Junior Writing students do some creative writing journals. I had them start out a story with "Last night I had a strange dream." Each subsequent sentence had to contain the following words (in the order given): pigs, balloon, Christmas, jiaozi (Chinese word for "dumplings"), airplane, Sonny, soccer ball and DVD. Below is the best four journals. Enjoy!
Sammy Last night I had a strange dream. That I was fighting for food with pigs. Finally I was win that my stomach was full like a balloon. Then I received the Christmas gift from my mom. I opened it that only jiaozi appeared. How happy I was as if I got the free meat on airplane. Oh, suddenly I realized it couldn’t be found by Sonny because he would eat them all. Luckily, he was playing soccer ball on the garden yard. So I watched the DVD called “Walk the Line” as eating jiaozi happily.
Ann Last night I had a strange dream. Many pigs are flying in the sky with wings. One of them has no wings, but it holds a balloon. “Christmas Pig”, someone shouted. And another voice “I want to eat jiaozi!” Suddenly, a huge airplane is nearer and nearer. Sonny is waving his hand in the airplane and in his other hand, there is a soccer ball of strange shape. Sonny smiled to the pigs and said proudly, “Do you have a DVD? I have one.”
Larry Last night I had a strange dream. In my dream a lovely little pig broke into my house. Then it saw a balloon on the ground and began to blow it. After that, it made a face and surprisingly began to talk, “Merry Christmas!” I was terrified and said trembling, “What do you want?” and it said, “Jiaozi.” I gave it and I got out a remote-control airplane and said, “You may take a seat in it.” But suddenly Sonny appeared falling down from the ceiling and crying, “Help!” I throw a very big soccer ball that he can make it underneath himself so that not to be hurt. The lovely little pig took a look at Sonny and got a DVD out of Sonny’s pocket and said, “I’m here to give you a present, and the present taken by my friend Sonny. The present is this DVD ‘Welcome to Disneyland!’”
Trina Last night I had a strange dream. There were many pigs in the forest. One of the pigs became a balloon and flied straight to the sky. Now I guess maybe I look forward to Christmas, so I always think I can fly to it because I was born in pig year. On Christmas Day my mother promise to do jiaozi for me. Let me go on describing my dream. Then I saw an airplane. We began to compete in the sky. Then I saw God. He was so lovely and his look was very like Sonny. I suddenly saw Sonny throw a soccer ball to me, just the moment, it became a DVD. At that time, I know it was a magic soccer ball. Maybe it’s because DVD’s are so cheap over here or maybe it’s our only American/Canadian culture outlet…. Anyway, I decided to compile the Top Ten Movies/TV Series Most Quoted/Referenced by Team Siping. If you hang out with us, these are a “must” in order to communicate. J
#10 – Roll Bounce – This recent edition (and barely making #10) was my birthday present from Seth. For some odd reason, this story about Lil’ Bow Wow’s character who wants to be the next “Sweetness” on roller-staking wheels at the Sweetwater Skate Rink is, how shall I put it, lifeless and jacked. But Seth, Wu, Robb & Steph seemed to like it. #9 – Spongebob Square Pants: The Movie – This one barely made the list. It’s here thanks to Wu because he’s mentions it like EVERYDAY. It’s about a sponge that lives under the sea (of course, he never looks wet or bloated) and has idiotic sea creatures as sidekicks and friends. It’s not for the intellectually-stimulated crowd! #8 – Veggie Tales – Anyone who has a kid (or is one) knows about these lovable, armless vegetables who teach Biblically-enhanced morals about life. Thanks to Josiah and Sarah, everyone watches them! Sing it with me, ”If you like to talk with tomatoes….” #7 – Forrest Gump – Not only is this Ruth’s favorite movie, but you must know about Bubba, chocolates and Ping-Pong. This movie features Tom Hanks as an idiotic (and very lucky) man who meets like every US President, hits the jackpot with stocks in Apple, is the whistle-blower of Watergate, and handles US/China relations with just a paddle and a ball. #6 – The Matrix – This movie only gets a placing because it’s CONSTANTLY quoted by Robb. It’s like he has “matrix-cized” Turret’s or something. It features Keanu Reeves as Neo who is destined (within the trilogy of movies) to free all of humanity. Sounds like Someone Else I know, hmm? #5 – Smallville – I think this is UPN’s or FOX’s version of Superman’s life in Smallville pre-his-move-to-the-big-city-days. I think Ruth, Seth & Robb are addicts! #4 – Napoleon Dynamite – Also known as, the “movie-I-love-to-hate”. For some reason Seth, Sarah, Wu & Robb really like it. It’s a story of a guy with no life and his Mexican compedre who navigate idiotic high school life in Idaho (I think). #3 – 24 – I call this one “my guilty pleasure”. It’s a FOX TV series that features Keifer Sutherland as an anti-terrorist agent named Jack Bauer. Each episode is one-hour long and takes places in real-time of one-hour lengths. After watching 24 episodes, you will have successfully watched one day in the life of Jack Bauer at the CTU (Counter-Terrorism Unit). They’re intense! #2 – Breakin’ – Two guys and a gal “break it down” in this 1980’s breakdancing flop. It highlights an unknown Jean-Claude Van Damm in the background of the first scene dancing in a full-body leotard. FYI: I noticed him! And…<insert drumroll here> #1 – The Simpsons – What more can I say? “Eeeh-haaa” “Pistol Whip” “Excellent” “Doh” “The Itchy & Scratchy Show” (yes, you just sang the tune!) “Okaly-Dokaly” & “Duff Beer” reign supreme. Who can’t help but be impressed by the people of Springfield? I looked online at KTUL.com and yesterday it showed a temp of 94 degrees in Tulsa. Wow! Right now, it's around 34 degrees. My students say this weather is abnormal, so I guess I will concur. I actually went today and had to wear my winter parka. It's April 19th, people! Amazing. There is so much I've seen in my first year in China.
Number of views as of this blog entry: 2068. 4月16日 Easter WeekendThis weekend was very significant since it was Easter. It marks the 26th year that I have lived since I accepted Jesus Christ into my life. I have, and never will be, the same.
During the weekend, there was a lot of activity. On Saturday (thanks to my mom & step-mom’s egg dye kits and Ruth’s trip for white eggs – only geese have white eggs here in Siping) I was able to spearhead a morning of fun for students. Ruth and Sarah’s Junior joined my three Freshmen Oral classes for egg dying, egg tossing, and egg hunting. I had a gold and silver egg that was worth special prizes when found. It was waaaay fun seeing them so excited at dying eggs which they had never done. The egg tossing was great since some just “chucked” their egg at their partner. I really thought someone was going to get pegged in the face but no dice. And, of course, the day wasn’t complete until there was an egg hunt. They about mowed me down when I shouted “Go!” before they went into the park where the Wu’s, the Norrie’s, Seth & Steph would hide the eggs.
After this we all went to the orphanage to repeat the “chaos” again. It was more low-key though since there were only with eight kids old enough to dye. My mom had sent me a “chocolate bunny” (not the kind you eat but one that actually smelled like chocolate – amazing). The “chocolate bunny” was the gold egg prize.
We also had fellow teachers from Changchun come visit us. With them Rachel and Jeweliann organized an Easter dinner. I made “angeled eggs” (right mom?) and mac & cheese. A good time was had by all.
See the album “Student Easter Fun” for pictures of my students and the album “Orphanage Easter Fun” for pictures of the kids.
Number of views as of this blog entry: 2043. 4月14日 It's MeThis week was a rough week. I had a lot of grading and was very busy. I hadn’t updated all week! Anyway, here’s some stuff that went down:
1) My computer screen has gone black. The LCD light doesn’t come on, so I can’t see the screen. Thank goodness I can connect to external monitors (like a TV) or I’d be stuck. Yikes! So I’m working on getting warranty help and tech support. No real biggie, right? 2) My Junior students had a journal topic which was finishing famous English proverbs. I’ve created a list for you (and my students) to read the funniest and most clever entries. 3) I just woke up at 6 AM China time. Last night, I went to bed <drumroll, please> at 5 PM. I just slept 13 hours. Wow! I haven’t done that since like 10 years ago. I guess I was like disastrously tired or something. But, hey, I feel really great now! 4) I got confirmation yesterday on my summer schedule. See my “Schedule” list on the right side of my blog for more info.
Peace out!

Li Jianzhong, former head of the prestigious China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology, was sentenced in a Beijing court on Tuesday, the Beijing News reported. The academy's financial officer, Zhang Lingying, was also sentenced to 20 years for her part in helping Li misappropriate 120 million Yuan of the funds, the paper said. The academy is China's main rocket engineering institute and has been responsible for the design and production of the world-class Long March series of carrier rockets. The academy also is involved in research and production of China's growing arsenal of ballistic missiles.

Just yesterday in class, I was wearing a short-sleeve polo and was actually hot in class. Now, in order to go out, I have to probably wear my winter parka. Weather in China's northeast is simply unpredictable and absolutely random.

McDonald’s and Madonna is one such combo. Madonna in Chinese is Mài dāng nà (麦当娜). McDonald’s in Chinese is Mài dāng láo (麦当劳). There is a joke in China that Madonna likes McDonald’s (not as in the food liking, but as in they’re dating). Now that’s funny!

1) A new Hengkeleng opened near our building. It is only a minute-walk away. They carry my favorite breakfast food - ma hua. It's like a donut but not.
2) Today is China's festival of "Ching Ming" which literally means "clean and bright". This is the day were they honor deceased ancestors and "pay" for their "afterlife" expenses. Read more at http://www.chcp.org/chingming.html or http://www.hkfastfacts.com/Chinese%20Festivals/ching_ming_festival.htm.
3) Robb & Jonny gave their lectures tonight. Robb talked about why our team is in Siping and Jonny talked about cartoons. Wube did a great job - I just loved it!
4) When I was in Changchun last Saturday, I actually found Doritos. It was like finding gold!
Nmber of views as of this entry: 1960. 4月4日 Class Culture & ShrekEach class I teach is 1 hour and 40 minutes long. At about half way into the class, the students get a 10-minute break. Now sometimes they'll sleep through the break and then it's like pulling teeth to get them to stay awake/pay attention. So I decided to try a tactic - that really works.
I started showing a movie during the break. About 3 weeks ago, I started showing Shrek. So I show about 10 minutes worth and then start the next class session. A few funny things have come from this action:
1) The students MOAN everytime I stop it. I had one students ask today, "Can't this be a movie class?" Now that was funny!
2) Other teachers on the team have jumped on board. I think Jonny shows cartoons; David is showing "The Princess Bride".
3) Other teachers have me on their "hit" list. Ruth said, "So you're the teacher that makes my students ask me how come they don't get to watch cartoons between break." Hey, if you got it, flaunt it!
4) Students REALLY look forward to break. I had one student keep prodding me to start the break, so he could see the movie. They're so funny.
5) I know like every scene of Shrek now since I queue it up for each class. I have three Freshmen Oral classes that I show it to each week, so I see it three times every week.
6) I put Chinese subtitles on, so I can practice recognizing characters and translation of English to Chinese.
7) There is no number 7.

I took some random pics of the event. Most are of different friends at Pizza Hut. See the album "Wu's Birthday". However, one is of Robb eating KFC (he looked funny on the train) and another is of a tattoo advertisement (I liked this picture). 生日快乐, Mr. Wu!
